Through daily use, subtle variations in colour, sheen and texture naturally appear. Areas that are touched most frequently — such as edges, handles, work surfaces or passageways — will evolve more quickly. The patina in these areas gradually becomes softer and lighter, while other zones retain their original appearance for longer.

A living patina has another important advantage: it is renewable. Even after 100 years.

After many years of intensive use, a surface can be repatinated. The existing patina can be refreshed or completely reapplied, allowing the material to retain its character without the need for replacement.

This principle is not new. In the past, people would regularly bring their copper pots and pans to a copper workshop to have them restored and treated again. It was a natural part of maintaining high-quality materials. Varnished or lacquered finishes, on the other hand, generally cannot be repaired locally. When the protective layer begins to wear away, it often leaves irregular wear patterns, and a complete refinishing is usually the only solution.
